Charleston man accused of tossing crying infant onto couch, causing injuries, records say

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — A Charleston man was charged after deputies said he tossed a baby because it wouldn’t stop crying, court records said.

David Allen Davis, 23, is charged with child abuse resulting in injury after an incident earlier this month that resulted in a 5-week-old infant suffering a fracture and hemorrhage, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

Deputies initially began investigating after they were called to a Charleston hospital on Aug. 7 for an infant that had suffered what staff determined to be non-accidental injuries.

Davis told investigators he became overwhelmed while caring for the baby due to it crying and needing a diaper change and fed and tossed the infant from a standing position to a couch, the complaint said.

Hospital workers said the baby suffered a subdural hemorrhage and a fractured pinky, according to the complaint.

Investigators said the infant hit its head on the wooden frame of the couch, causing the injuries found at the hospital.

Davis is currently being held on a $3,000 cash only bond.
