WASHINGTON (TND) — Dr.Jill Stein, who is a Green Party presidential candidate, has selected Professor Butch Ware as her vice-presidential running mate.
Stein made the announcement late Friday night, saying Ware is the perfect person for the job.
“His personal experience overcoming systemic injustice, his deep knowledge of history and people’s movements, and his commitment to building a sustainable, just, peaceful world make Butch the ideal candidate," Stein noted in a news release. "This is truly a historic ticket bringing together a Jewish woman and Black Muslim man against genocide, endless war, climate collapse, and rampant injustice, and for an economy that works for working people, a livable future for our children, and an America and a world that works for all of us.”
Stein went on to note that "Ware is a lifelong activist and educator specializing in the history of empire, colonialism, genocide and revolution." For the last 20 years, he has been teaching history, Black studies, and Islamic studies.
The news comes as Democrats are getting serious about grinding down independent candidates.
The Democratic National Committee filed a complaint seeking to remove Stein from the ballot in Wisconsin.
State law requires those who nominate electors for the Green Party convention be state officers, legislature members and judges, among others.Candidates for state congress can also participate. The complaint notes that, because the party does not have anyone who qualifies as a nominator, the Green Party cannot legally name a slate of electors.
Whatever happens with the complaint could alter the election's outcome. Four of the past six presidential elections have been decided by between 5,700 votes and 23,000 votes in Wisconsin. Stein is expected to be officially named her party's nominee at their national convention.
