KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — A Kanawha County deputy was shot in the hand during an overnight pursuit, the sheriff's office said.
Deputies were involved in a pursuit around 1:11 a.m. Thursday morning on Walker Drive in Sissonville, according to a news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office.
The pursuit is believed to have been initiated after the deputy recognized the vehicle, driven by Nathan Oxley, 43, of Sissonville, as the suspect vehicle from an active disturbance call.
Deputies said Oxley turned down Applehill Lane from Walker Drive and fired multiple shots at the deputy as he was exiting his patrol car. One of the shots hit the deputy in the hand, but he was able to return fire. Oxley was not hit.
The sheriff's office said Oxley refused to comply with lawful orders to surrender and non-lethal force was used in order to take him into custody.
Oxley was also taken to the hospital following the incident. He was later released and charged with attempted murder of a police officer and malicious wounding.
The sheriff's office said the deputy is in stable condition.
A woman in the vehicle fled the area but has since been located. She is currently being evaluated by medics for prolonged exposure to the cold and no charges are expected to be filed.
