More than half of the old Sears building in downtown Charleston is now knocked down, the contractor for the project said.

Contractor Rodney Loftis said Tuesday more than half of the structure has been demolished and things are going well in the demolition process.

Once the building is down, crews will clear the debris and take care of the building pad and foundation – work that will take about two to three weeks.

The demolition comes after a lengthy debate between the mall’s ownership group and the new property owners who plan to build a hotel where Sears once stood.
