LINCOLN COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — Duval Elementary and Middle School abruptly closed in the summer in 2021, after the building was deemed unsafe.
"There was a problem with foundation and part of the building was actually sinking," Lincoln County Schools Superintendent Frank Barnett said.
As the county looked to rebuild a new school at the same location Barnett said the funding came up short for the initial bid, resulting in working to redesign and restructure the building. The project was bid out again.
"Well, with economics the way they are, it came back again and it was still over budget, just about the same amount," Barnett said.
The School Building Authority originally allotted $27 million, leaving a deficit of close to $15 million at the time.
"With the Lincoln County School District coming up with some additional funding, we were able to go the SBA and request supplemental funding," Barnett said. "They came through for us this morning to the tune of about $11.9 million."
Duval students have continued their learning at Lincoln County Schools central office.
"It's very small classrooms, no windows," Barnett said. "They need a new building. They need in their school."
Demolition of the old building began on Jan. 2.
"We're very excited about it. These students desperately need their building," Barnett said.
Barnett told Eyewitness News the contractor said from the start of construction, it will take around 810 days to complete. The estimated timeframe for the school to open is in the fall in 2026.
