Train derails near middle school in St. Albans

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — A CSX train derailed about 20 cars loaded with coal Wednesday morning in St. Albans, officials with the company said.

CSX officials said the derailment occurred at 7:15 a.m. in the 3000 block of Kanawha Terrace behind McKinley Middle School.

No homes were damaged, and no injuries were reported.

CSX personnel are on the scene with St. Albans police and the St. Albans Fire Department assessing the situation.

Police said the train was hauling coal, and there is no environmental impact from the derailment. The engine did not leave the tracks.

A crane will have to be brought in to remove the cars.

CSX officials released the following statement:

The safety of the community, the environment and everyone on site is our top priority as we develop a recovery plan. While most of the cars remain upright, a small amount of coal from a couple of the cars was released into the Two and Three Quarter Mile Creek. Additional CSX personnel are en route to help protect the local waterway, restore the site and assist in the resumption of service as safely and quickly as possible. We appreciate the prompt response provided by the City of St. Albans and will provide additional details once more information is available.
