TUCSON, Az. (WCHS) — West Virginia baseball goes 3-0 in the Tucson Regional to punch their ticket to the program's first ever Super Regional. In the Regional Championship, WVU knocked off Grand Canyon 10-6, defeating the Antelopes for the second time in the tournament. Head Coach Randy Mazey is retiring at the end of the season, but retirement will have to wait.
WVU scored 10 runs on 17 hits, with Logan Sauve leading the Mountaineers with 3 hits and 3 RBI. JJ Wetherholt also had 3 hits and Sam White, Reed Chumley and Parkersburg's Grant Hussey all drove in two runs. Hussey also had two hits on the night.
West Virginia led 2-0 after the top of the first inning, but in the bottom frame GCU scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead. WVU starting pitcher Hayden Cooper left in the first inning without getting out and gave up 3 earned runs on 3 hits and also walked two batters. Aidan Major came in relief and went 4.2 innings, giving up just one earned run on two hits. Carson Estridge threw 3.2 innings of shutout baseball and struck out four batters, walking none.
Zach Yorke hit a two-run homer in the ninth to make it 10-6 so Friday's winner Derek Clark had to come in relief to get the final two outs to help WVU get the win.
Offensively the Mountaineers scored runs in each of the first five innings.
